I initially thought by now I'd be riding to work at least a few times a week. Alas, my first trial ride to Sydney CBD took me almost two hours. And I didn't even make it to the CBD. With the map reading at almost every block, struggling with every uphill climb, slowing down on downhills as I'm afraid of going too fast, and having to walk across almost every intersection and roundabout, two hours was reasonable.
Oh and I fell. Out of stupidity. I knew I was too parallel to go up the curb, but I did anyway. Luckily, I had my helmet on and landed on the footpath and not on the road I could have easily been hit by car. The impact did make me walk my bike until I saw a park bench where I sat to rest for a few minutes.
A month on and I still imagine a twinge of pain on the right side of my head. As much as I love the wind in my hair when I bike and all the helmet-less cycle chic photos, I'll be keeping my helmet on and lusting after chic helmets and all manner of stylish cycling gear.
